Oxygen masks are necessary for pilots to work under overloads, in flight conditions at high altitude in case of cabin depressurization or ejection.
This type of mask was developed back in the late 60s of the XX century and was intended for joint use with the ZSH-5 aviation helmet.
This mask is still used today in North Korea and third world countries, where Soviet models of third—generation aircraft were supplied at one time. The KM-34 was also seen on the downed Syrian pilot in the initial stage of the Syrian conflict.
Also, the preserved samples are used in private aviation.
The design of the KM-34 became canonical in a sense: on subsequent samples, the shape of the plastic frame, the microphone headset, and the valve changed, but in fact, the KM-34 is the standard of masking to this day. Due to the fact that the mask fastenings have remained unchanged so far, the KM-34 can be used with all types of modern protective helmets.
